History:
The Summit County Community Band got its start in Breckenridge
in 1982, on the back of a flat-bed truck. Not very auspicious,
but it was for a parade and who wants to march in Summit County
in January? Sandy Cleveland organized a small band of people to
play for that year's Ullr Parade, a snow festival. The group enjoyed
it enough to continue playing.
By 1992, our conductor at the time, Mark Jeffrey, brought us
from the back of the truck to the stage. Our membership had increased
to twenty members and Mark motivated us to push ourselves musically
and to perform more challenging music.
By 2002, our membership had grown to thirty members, we changed
our name to Summit Concert Band, and we were performing about
ten concerts a year in Summit, Grand, and Park counties. Our 20th
Anniversaary Reunion Concert was highlighted by having David Warble
rehearse and conduct "Highlights from the Lord of the Rings
Symphony" by Johann de Meij. Another highlight was having
Brian perform with us. His parents, Dean and Beth Russell, met
at community band rehearsal back in 1982.
Our members come from many walks of life. We are teachers, students,
retirees, mechanics, drivers, accountants, etc., etc. Our musical
backgrounds vary from played in high school, college, learned
as an adult, played with the Glenn Miller Orchestra, played Oktoberfests
wearing lederhosen, and dotted the "i" at Ohio State.
(Please browse our "Profiles" section to see more.)
We continue to grow, rehearse weekly, perform often, and are always
seeking new members. Please contact us about performances or joining,
even if you're 'just passing through.'
